Until this week I couldn't have told you the name of the man who kept the garden at The Briars, where Napoleon lodged his first couple of months. Toby. Enslaved, Malay by origin, already on the island years before any of this was arranged for him or around him.

The crossing ran about ten weeks out of Plymouth, 1815, Northumberland under Captain Charles Ross with Admiral Cockburn aboard holding the orders. The household went too: Marchand the valet, Saint-Denis who everyone called Ali, the Archambault brothers for the horses, Cipriani for the table, the Bertrands and their children. Roughly 1,900 km of open water to the nearest coast, which was the entire reason for choosing it. He had six years there and died in 1821.

Inés, the paperwork is almost stranger than the island. Four powers signed a convention in August 1815 making him the prisoner of the Allies rather than of Britain alone, with Britain doing the actual keeping; Austria, Russia and France each sent a commissioner to St Helena to watch. As it happens, several of them never got a proper look at him in all those years.

He took a working library with him, several hundred volumes, and kept asking for more from England. And Las Cases sat there taking dictation most days until he was removed from the island in 1816; the Mémorial came out a few years after the death and sold enormously, which is a strange second career for ten weeks of open water.
