She published a short blog post that afternoon and left the house not long after; the car bomb killed her near her home in Bidnija, in 2017. She was 53, and left a husband and three sons. A public inquiry later found that the state had failed to protect her. In Valletta, candles and photographs are still laid at the foot of the Great Siege Monument, cleared away and put back again.

Her sons kept reporting, kept asking the questions she'd been asking, which can't have been easy. The inquiry's finding that the state failed in its duty to protect her mattered partly because it was written down, where it could be read. People tend the places where someone was lost: candles cleared away, candles put back.

The blog was called Running Commentary, and she'd been writing it since 2008. The last post went up a few hours before, short, in the same plain register as all the rest.
